Instant Cold Packs

There have been many occasions, when we just fall down while playing or by slipping down somewhere and suddenly out-of-nowhere end up bruising ourselves. Now, one does not always necessarily fall near our house or as a matter of fact even close to some kind of an ice factory, which can help us provide some amount of ice immediately to be used as an ice pack. It is under such a situation, that instant ice packs come under foreplay. Instant ice packs, as the name suggests are a substitute for the traditional ice packs available in the market today. These ice packs are mostly found only in the chemist shops easily and though they all have the same basic composition, they might vary in sizes beginning from small to big. Thus, depending on how big and how bad the bruise is one can go and choose the ice pack accordingly.

How Instant Cold Packs work?

Basically, an instant ice pack consists of two sections. These two sections consist of two separate bags. These two bags are placed one inside the other. The inner bag consists of a chemical called ammonium nitrate fertilizer and the outer bag consists of water. It is this chemical that plays the role of ice or rather acts as a substitute of ice. Basically if you ever buy an ice pack, it would look just like a normal plastic bag. All one needs to do is hit it and shake it aggressively and the pack suddenly becomes really cold.

Exactly what kind of liquid present in instant cold packs

The liquid chemical present inside the ice pack is known as ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Once the pack is squeezed, this chemical reacts and dissolves in the water quickly and suddenly becomes really cold.

How instant cold packs?

To begin with the action of the ice pack, like mentioned before one needs to hit it and then stir it up aggressively. This action leads to the breaking up of the packet or the pouch containing ammonium nitrate fertilizer and it’s mixing in the water. This sudden mixing of the chemical in water results in an endothermic reaction, which absorbs heat and suddenly the temperature of the pack, falls down and it becomes extremely cold. Now, finally the ice pack is ready for use.

Is instant cold packs is safe?

Well there has been a lot of controversy on the usage of ammonium nitrate fertilizer in the ice packs. Many pharmacists as well as many people in general, over the years have raised questions about how good is the usage of ammonium nitrate fertilizer for the skin, and once used and disposed what would its effect on the environment as well as on the other forms of life, who mostly might eat from the garbage for their survival such as stray dogs. In the light of these recent controversies, finally many studies have been made and it has been clearly found out that, ammonium nitrate is not a very good option for the skin neither is it a very good option to dispose it in the environment, once the pack has been used.

Thus, finally after many studies, now many instant ice pack companies are using urea instead of ammonium nitrate fertilizer to suit the needs of the skin as well as the environment.
